The British Nationality Act guaranteed that, although Irish citizens living in Britain would no longer be British citizens, they would have the rights of British citizens. It also allowed freedom of travel between the two countries. The British Nationality Act 1981 was an Act of Parliament passed by the British Parliament concerning British nationality. It has been the basis of British nationality law since 1 January 1983.
